Nursing Care Patient on Phenytion Therapy

Nursing care of Phenytion
  • Assess location,duration and characteristics of seizure activity.
  • Chase labs of CBC,calcium,platelet and urinalysis.
  • Routine EEG should be done,Administer with or immediately after meals to minimize GI irritation.
  • Shake liquid preparations well before pouring and have patient swallow a fluid first,follow with mixture of medication,and than follow with a full glass of water or food.
  • Administer as intermittently,and that infusion by mixing with 0.9% Normal Saline only.
  • Monitor Cardic Function and blood pressure through out infusion.
  • Do not admix with other solutions or medications,especially with dextrose.
  • Slight yellow color will not alter solution potency.
  • Teach patient that phenytion may change colour of urine from pink to reddish brown.
  • I/M route not recommended
  • Separate administration of antacids and oral phenytion by two hours.
