Nursing care of Phenytion
- Assess location,duration and characteristics of seizure activity.
- Chase labs of CBC,calcium,platelet and urinalysis.
- Routine EEG should be done,Administer with or immediately after meals to minimize GI irritation.
- Shake liquid preparations well before pouring and have patient swallow a fluid first,follow with mixture of medication,and than follow with a full glass of water or food.
- Administer as intermittently,and that infusion by mixing with 0.9% Normal Saline only.
- Monitor Cardic Function and blood pressure through out infusion.
- Do not admix with other solutions or medications,especially with dextrose.
- Slight yellow color will not alter solution potency.
- Teach patient that phenytion may change colour of urine from pink to reddish brown.
- I/M route not recommended
- Separate administration of antacids and oral phenytion by two hours.
